The Burrows

Eve Shuckburgh was born in 1910 and grew up at the stately Shuckburgh Hall in Warwickshire. During the war she served as a nurse in the Voluntary Aid Detachment in London.

Anthony was mobilised to France in 1939. Back in Britain on leave, he and Eve got engaged and were married in the chapel of Shuckburgh Hall in February 1940.

Anthony was at Dunkirk with Neil Campbell. During the rapid German advance he was caught behind enemy lines, but managed to rejoin his regiment, picking up some lost comrades along the way. The Kent Yeomanry were one of the last regiments to be evacuated. It was all very hectic. Having waded out to the boat at Dunkirk, Anthony hung out his trousers to dry – and never saw them again! A scrap of paper was thrown from speeding train to platform at Bromley South.. “The Kent Yeomanry are back!”

Anthony and Eve were reunited for a year.
