The Campbells

Neil got ten days leave at Christmas 1939 which he and Mary spent in Cornwall. Then he was back to France, and was one of the last soldiers to be evacuated from Dunkirk. Mary was always confident that Neil would survive the war, as her father had survived WW1.

The next ten months were spent in army camps in Scotland, Wales, and England, and Mary travelled long distances to be with Neil whenever she could. They started to raise a family together.

Then the Kent Yeomanry was sent to Egypt, and afterwards to Italy, and although they wrote to each other frequently, they did not see each other for another five years.
