The Campbells

Neil Campbell was born in 1916, and joined the Kent Yeomanry part-time straight from school, while he qualified as a solicitor. The family lived at Underriver near Sevenoaks.

He met Mary Styles, who was born in 1918 and lived at Boughton Monchelsea, at a cricket match in Kent, and became great friends.

They married on 19 September 1939, sixteen days after the declaration of war. Mary remembers being distinctly irritated that war was going to intervene in their married life together. They enjoyed a two-day honeymoon at the Berkeley Hotel in London, and five days later Neil was mobilised to France.
