FV601(C) Saladin Mk 2 Armoured Car

Introduced in 1958, the Saladin was the main armoured car operated by the British Army through to the 1970s.  The Sharpshooters first received the Saladin in 1970, just as it was approaching the end of its service life. However, it remained in service with the unit until 1984.

Combat weight was 11.5 tonnes, it was powered by a Rolls-Royce B80 No1 Mk 6D engine providing 160bhp, which gave a maximum road speed of 72kp/h.  Armament was one 76.2mm L5A1 gun with a coaxial 7.62mm machine-gun.  It had a crew of three.

A Saladin can be found just outside our museum.
