A Comet tank with crew wearing the standard ‘Pixie’ suit

A34 Comet Tank

Based very closely on the Cromwell tank, the Comet shared many features but was a major redesign with significantly better armour and, more importantly a 77mm gun based on the successful 17-pounder anti-tank gun

The design retained the Cromwell’s very reliable and powerful Meteor engine, which was itself a modified Merlin engine – as used by the Spitfire.

The Comet was agile, reliable and able to overmatch the best German tanks at the end of the War.  It’s design led directly to the Centurion which remained in British Army service for nearly fifty years.
