After North Africa The Sharpshooters took part in the Sicily campaign where Allan took temporary command of the regiment in the thick of battle when the commanding officer was killed at the battle of Primosole Bridge.  Subsequently The Sharpshooters fought their way up the east coast of Italy before returning to Europe to take part in the invasion of Normandy.

In the battles after D-Day the two Sharpshooters regiments took such heavy casualties that they were amalgamated.  There was a surplus of officers, and the opportunity was taken to stand down the older and the battle-weary, including Allan, and to send them home.  Allan still had plenty to give…
