Marshall had no wish to continue in the Army now that the war had ended. Offers of a senior rank did not tempt him to stay and, in November 1946, with a glowing reference from his Commanding Officer, he was demobbed back into civilian life.
On 1 May 1948, Marshall married his sweetheart, Doris Davy, whom he had met during the war following an introduction by another CLY trooper, Ellis Slack (later Reverend Slack).
After a brief spell in Leicestershire, Marshall and Doris moved to Doris’ home town of Maltby, South Yorkshire.
Here, for the next 20 years, as a pillar of the local community, Marshall ran the local grocer’s shop – ‘Davy’s Cash Stores’, during which time he and Doris had 2 children, Susan and Neil.
Marshall served as the only Independent member on the Labour-dominated Maltby Urban District Council, was Chairman of the local Chamber of Trade, and was a committed Churchwarden and churchgoer.
