The Grocer

Acting Sergeant & Tank Commander

The Sharpshooters crossed the Rhine and continued their advances, with heavy fighting, deeper into Germany, eventually reaching Hamburg as the Germans surrendered in May 1945.

After a brief spell as part of the Allied Army of Occupation, Marshall was selected to be transferred to the Far East, where the war with Japan continued. The atomic bombs dropped on Japan in August made any such transfer unnecessary.

Marshall now trained new recruits, as experienced men were demobbed. In December 1945, he was promoted first to Lance Corporal and then to full Corporal. On 10 June 1946, he was promoted to acting Sergeant and given his own tank command.

He was also able to establish that elder sister Beatt and her family were safe and still in Saxony. Ernst, conscripted into the German Army, was in a military hospital, having been wounded.

In September 1946, 3/4CLY was suspended, Sharpshooters were allocated to other regiments and Marshall transferred to the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment with the rank of Corporal
