Michael was commissioned into the Kent Yeomanry in 1936. He went with the regiment to France and was evacuated at Dunkirk.
He went on to serve in the Middle East and it was during the regiment's withdrawal to Mersa Matruh in the Western Desert in June 1941 that Michael was wounded. He was subsequently captured and was transported to a Prisoner of War camp in Italy.
