2001 – 9/11 terrorist attacks in the USA

We chose 2001 as a significant date because it was the year that America saw its worst terrorist attack.

On 11th September 2001 (Americans call it 9/11), Islamist extremists hijacked four planes that were flying above the USA.  Two of them were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York on purpose.  This was a big shock to America and the world.  The twin towers of the World Trade Center were the highest buildings in New York, and world famous.  When they were destroyed New York’s skyline changed and their destruction had a huge impact on the rest of the world for years to come.

We chose this as a significant date in history because it had so much effect on the world.  It was largest single loss of life on American soil and it led to the USA’s War on Terror, which meant war in Iraq and Afghanistan, as they tried to bring Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda to justice.
