1886 - the first motor car

We chose 1886 as a significant date because it was the year the first motor car thought to mark the birth of the modern car.

A car is a wheeled, self-powered motor vehicle used for transportation.  They run on roads, have seating for one to eight people, typically have four wheels, and are mainly for the transport of people.  In 1886 German inventor Karl Benz built the Benz Patent-Motorwagen.  Cars did not become widely available until the early 20th century. One of the first cars that were accessible to the masses was the 1908 Model T, an American car manufactured by the Ford Motor Company.

This was a significant event because it was a faster way of transport.  This meant that people could travel to more places and much more easily as well.  It also provided more job opportunities in manufacturing, car sales and driving.
