Yet another officer who saw distinguished war service with the Kent Yeomanry.

After the withdrawal to the Alamein Line in July 1942, Charles was with the regiment when it was ordered into a defensive position at Deir El Shein. When the enemy began to shell the position, several officers became casualties, whereupon Charles ran across ground swept by machine gun fire to take command of the guns.

When all the guns were knocked out he organised the withdrawal of his men. He was the last one to leave on foot as the remaining vehicles were had been knocked out by shell fire. For this action he was awarded the Military Cross.
