Captain Maurice Allfrey, brother of Hubert, was commissioned in 1936 whilst with Cambridge University Officer Training Corps. He joined the Kent Yeomanry in 1938 and after war broke out went with the regiment to France. He went on to play a key role in evacuating 385 Battery from St Valery for which he received the Distinguished Service Order.
He went with the regiment to the Middle East and was mentioned in dispatches in April 1941. After the withdrawal to the Alamein Line in July 1942, the regiment was ordered into a defensive position at Deir El Shein. The regiment became the target of sporadic enemy shelling, and in one of the opening salvoes, Maurice was killed.
