11 June Celebration

We are looking forward to a great celebration at our museum at Hever on 11 June 2022.

At 1200 we will be unveiling a new portrait of the late John Morrison BEM, our standard bearer in the Cold War. John was a Ghanaian and was an airman in Africa in WW2 before moving to the UK where he served firstly in the RAF and then the Sharpshooters. We look forward to hosting many members of the Morrison family who will be joining us for the day.

We will also be celebrating, throughout the day, the combined actions of the Kent Yeomanry and the 3rd battalion of the 1st Punjab Regiment in Italy in WW2, and look forward to welcoming members of the Sikh community in Kent. The 3 Bn of the 1st Punjab Regiment donated this magnificent silver statuette of a Sikh soldier, which is on permanent display at the museum.

Our volunteers will be at the museum from 1030 to 1600 on 11 June, and you are most welcome to come and chat with us. For those unfamiliar with the museum, we are an independent museum in the grounds of Hever Castle, Kent TN8 7NG and entry to the museum is included in a ticket to visit the grounds of the castle. Please visit www.hevercastle.co.uk for prices and opening times.

Many thanks to South East Museums Development and Arts Council England for sponsoring the new painting and the exhibition.

For more information about the statuette, please see "The Oscar Winner" story in the WW2 section of the Stories on this website. For more information about John Morrison BEM please see "The Standard Bearer" in the post-WW2 section of the stories on this website.
