1833- the abolition of slavery in the British Empire

We chose 1833 as a significant date because it was the year that slavery was abolished in the British Empire.

It meant all black slaves in the British Empire were now free people.  This didn’t mean that there was no more racism or discrimination but it meant that the former slaves were now free.  This event later helped to abolish slavery in other countries such as America, Scotland and France.

When Great Britain abolished slavery it influenced other countries to follow.  This is one of many reasons why we believe that this is a significant event.
