From Waterloo Hero to Pauper

Lieutenant George Albert, 1787-1856, West Kent Yeomanry

George Wyndham Albert was born in Bishopsgate, London 1787. At the age of 18 he enlisted into the 15th (Kings) Hussars on 23rd October 1805. The next 25 years saw him on active service during the Peninsular Wars and the Battle of Waterloo (1815) by which time he had attained the rank of Sergeant.

By the time of his discharge with pension on 10 August 1830 he had attained the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major. He was awarded Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and General Service Medal with clasps for Sahagun, Vittoria, Orthes and Toulouse, and these are deposited with the National Army Museum. He was noted to have been wearing a Waterloo Medal when he died, but it is unknown if this medal has survived.
