From Waterloo Hero to Pauper

West Kent Yeoman in the 1840’s

On 21st March 1831 George was commissioned into the West Kent Yeomanry and was appointed Adjutant with a Brevet rank of Lieutenant. It is probably around this time that he married and took up residence in Godden Green, Seal near Sevenoaks, Kent. The 1841 census records George with wife Jemima and six children.

The next census in 1851 shows the Albert family still living in the same place. George's occupation is recorded as Farmer of 42 acres employing 4 men and a 15-year old domestic servant. However, George was experiencing significant financial difficulties. He had recently spent time in Maidstone Gaol as an insolvent debtor.
