From Waterloo Hero to Pauper

Memorial stone commemorating Lieutenant George Albert

His active military life and worries about his finances undoubtedly took a toll on his health, yet he continued his duties as Adjutant with the West Kent Yeomanry.

On 6th June 1856, aged 69, he was present during an inspection of the regiment in Mote Park near Maidstone. Several people noticed him being anxious that a manoeuvre should be carried out correctly, and that he shouted very earnestly at his men.  He then turned his horse slowly and fell dead from his saddle. It was stated by the surgeons present that his death was caused by “ossification of the heart”.

A commemorative stone plaque was placed in the park by the regiment which is now in the possession of the KSY Museum.
