The Canadian

General Allard as Canadian Chief of Defence Staff

General Jean-Victor Allard

On his return to Canada Allard was heavily-involved in key changes to the structure of Canada’s forces.

These included breaking away from a British “Commonwealth” model for rank badges and uniforms, and adopting common uniforms and badges of rank across the Navy, Army and Air Force.  Some common elements, such as medical services were merged.

He is also remembered for the expansion of the number of French-speaking units across Canada’s armed forces.

He retired in 1969 and died in 1996.
