The Canadian

Brigadier Allard in Korea at the time of the ceasefire (1953)

General Jean-Victor Allard

Back in Canada his regiment adopted methods taught by 4CLY, including a regiment-wide training programme.  Soon, however, he transferred to the infantry, joining the Royal 22e Régiment (R22R) to stay in a French-speaking unit.  He commanded the R22R “The Van Doos” during fierce fighting in Italy.  After the war he spent time as Canadian Defence Attaché in Moscow.  In 1953, he took command of the 25th Canadian Infantry Brigade in Korea, signing the armistice on Canada’s behalf.

After further service in Canada he was given command of Britain’s 4th Armoured Division (1961-63), there being no suitable Canadian force of a similar size.  This reflected both Allard’s reputation and a wish to keep Canada as an active part of NATO’s forces in Europe.
