A Vickers Mk6c tank of 4CLY on manoeuvres, Autumn 1940

General Jean-Victor Allard

4CLY covered the coast between area between Rye and Folkestone.  The British forces were so weak, however, that the squadron Allard was with had only 9 light tanks to cover 12 miles of coast.  To hide their numbers they were ordered to drive across as many fields as possible to leave track marks to deceive German aircraft.

Allard described the yeomen he worked with as “...reserved; sometimes they seemed almost shy.  Once you got to know them, however, they were friendly and enormously funny.  At work they were serious.  At play they were aggressive, staunch defenders of what…they described as “fair play; they were formidable opponents.”  Allard returned to his regiment in Canada in early 1941 when 4CLY was ordered to North Africa.
