Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC)

The extension of award of the DSO and MC to all ranks resulted in the abolition of many of the older medals for gallantry such as the DCM and the MM.

Since the award of the Victoria Cross (VC) was set at such a high standard, it was felt that there should be something to bridge the cap between the VC and the DSO or MC,  and, in particular, to replace the DCM.

In Oct 1993, therefore, a new high award for gallantry was instituted in the form of the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross.  It was to be available to all ranks and was first conferred in 1995 for gallantry in Bosnia.
