Military Cross (MC)

Military Cross (MC)

The Military Cross was instituted by Royal Warrant of 28 Dec 1914.  It was to be awarded for gallant and distinguished service in battle by junior officers (up to Captain) and Warrant Officers.  An amendment in 1915 permitted the use of the letters MC after the name of the recipient.

In 1953 eligibility was extended to Majors.

In 1993 the various crosses which had formerly been largely officers’ awards including the MC were made available to all ranks.
