With the formation of the Imperial Yeomanry the Kent Yeomanry provided three contingents for service in South Africa, these were 

  • —33rd (East Kent) Company
  • —36th (West Kent) Company
  • —53rd (East Kent) Company

The first battle in which the 33rd (East Kent) Company was engaged was at Biddulphsberg where the British lost over 170 casualties.  Continuous fighting on a small scale took place until late July 1900 when they were involved in General Prinsloo's surrender.  They eventually formed part of the garrison of Frankfort which they held for over four months.  They returned home in May 1901
