Captain William Wharton 1785-1855

The 2nd Batt. of 73rd  Foot were in the thick of the battle at Waterloo, with terrible casualties. William was himself injured, being shot through both thighs by musket balls. He was placed on Half-Pay when his battalion was disbanded in 1817.

He was sent to the Island of Corfu as Inspector of Militia, and married Sarah Turner in 1818.  He declined to be recalled for active service in 1822, and became Barrack Master at Brecon in Wales.  He died in Brecon in 1855.

In the medal case are William’s Military General Service Medal, with clasp Fuentes d’Onor (a battle in the Peninsular War), and his Waterloo medal.
