The 'Oscar' Winner

For his gallantry during the battle Jack was subsequently awarded an immediate Military Cross. The citation concluded with the words ”The courage, energy and devotion to duty displayed by Lieut. Bazzard in a grave emergency was a fine example to all ranks. By sheer determination and outstanding leadership, this young Artillery officer had overcome the tremendous handicap that his complete lack of knowledge and experience of Indian troops must have proved.”

Towards the end of the war, Jack had the honour to receive, on behalf of 385 Battery, a magnificent silver figure of a Punjabi soldier on a plinth inscribed:

“TO THOSE WHO SERVED OUR GUNS PRESENTED TO THE OFFICERS 385 BTY THE KENT YEOMANRY 1944 – 1945 3rd Bn 1st PUNJAB REGIMENT”

This statuette, which is nicknamed ‘the Oscar’, is still one of the most esteemed pieces of silver in our collection.

Jack died in 2009, having been for many years the President of the Royal British Legion in Tenterden.
