As the OP Party and the infantry pushed forward they came under heavy enemy shell and mortar fire suffering many casualties. Very soon all the Punjabi’s officers were injured and Jack found himself, as the only uninjured officer, in command of ‘A’ Company.
By this time they had reached their objective which was under mortar fire. Both Jack and two of his OP party were wounded by the blast from one bomb which also rendered their wireless set inoperable. Consequently he had no communications with the guns to direct their fire. Despite a head wound Jack managed to consolidate the position until they were joined by another company of the 3/1st Punjabis. At day break they were ordered back to headquarters.
