The Cricketer

Awarded his cap in 1882,  Lord Harris went on to score 7,842 runs for the county at an average of 30.04, including 10 centuries and a top score of 176 against Sussex in 1882.  He was a right handed batsman who bowled right arm fast with a roundarm action.

Harris was President of Kent County Cricket Club in 1875 and Secretary from 1875-1880,.

He became the 13th cap and second captain of the England team, visiting Australia for a single Test at Melbourne in early January 1879.

He was captain for three more Tests, all against Australia. Harris was MCC President in 1895, and continued to hold various roles and strong influence at the MCC for the next 37 years.

Harris had very strong views on upholding the rules of the game, especially concerning illegal bowling actions and residential qualifications. He was revered by the MCC establishment, and heavily criticised elsewhere.
