A keen sportsman, Dunraven not only kept race horses, but his yachts Valkyrie II and III were the British competitors in the America’s Cup races in 1893 and 1895. His yacht’s steward later joined the Sharpshooters to accompany him to the Boer War as his batman.
Dunraven also spent a lot of time hunting wild game around the World, but his scheme to make Estes Park in Colorado, USA, into a private game preserve proved hugely unpopular and his subsequent attempt to create a tourist resort there also failed.
It did, however, prevent the land being developed by small farmers and it is today part of the Rocky Mountain National Park.
