MIDDLE EAST 1942-43

In October 1942, 4CLY took part with 7th Armoured Division in the Battle of El Alamein. After 2 weeks of bitter fighting, Rommel’s Afrika Korps began its long retreat from the Western Desert, but very much a fighting withdrawal.

4CLY celebrated the capture of Tripoli in Jan 1943. defence against Rommel’s counterattack at Medenine in March and supporting infantry in the assault on the Mareth Line in April.

Finally on May 7th they entered Tunis ending a journey of 2000 miles in 6 months. When King George VI visited the army at Tunis, 4CLY were introduced as ‘the finest armoured regiment in North Africa,
