World War 1

Ground covered by the Kent Yeomanry and Sharpshooters during World War I

The course of the war - 2

With stalemate on the Western Front,  an attempt was made by the allies in 1915 to make a new attack at Gallipoli (part of the Ottoman Empire) but the location was well defended and the allies withdrew after many casualties and no strategic success. Allied troops did achieve success against the Ottomans in Palestine in 1916 and 1917.

However,  the main focus of the war continued to be on the Western Front

In 1917, following a revolution, the Russians made peace with Germany, with the result that the Germans had more men available to fight the allies.  Around the same time, the US joined the war on the side of the allies.

1918 brought new  German successes, before the superior manpower of the allies broke through the German positions, who started to retreat.

Fighting continued to the last hour of the war, with armistice (ceasefire) at 11am on 11 November 1918.
