Corporal Marshall Thomas Hubbard, 1923-2007, 4th & 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry

Marshall Thomas Hubbard was born on 11 May 1923 in Huncote, Leicestershire, where his father was employed as a engineer/train driver at the local stone quarry.

Marshall was one of 4 brothers and 2 sisters. He was a talented footballer and cricketer, played soccer for Leicestershire Boys from the age of 12 to 14 and was invited for a trial at the then First Division club, Derby County.

Cost prohibited Marshall from accepting a scholarship for Wigston Grammar School, so, after attending Narborough  Secondary Modern School, he left at age 14 to work as a warehouseman and later a driver in the leather industry.

In 1932 Marshall’s sister, Beatrice (Beatt), had married a German hosiery engineer, Ernst, and they were living in Dublin. In August 1939, Beatt took their 2 children to visit Ernst’s parents in Saxony, Germany; whilst there WW II broke out.
