Crossing the Volturno

Aftermath

With the river crossed, the Germans began to withdraw north and the advance continued.

The crossing of the Volturno is believed to be the first opposed river crossing undertaken by British armoured forces in the Second World War.  The innovative and imaginative approach adopted by the Sharpshooters was used for training and influenced the work of waterproofing vehicles for D-Day.

On 5th November the Sharpshooters received notice that they were to be withdrawn from the front.  Montgomery had requested that his Desert Rats be brought back to the UK in order that they could take part in the Normandy landings.
