Crossing the Volturno

During the landings at Salerno in Southern Italy in 1943, 4th CLY (Sharpshooters) were operating as part of 7th Armoured Division’s 22nd Armoured Brigade.  This assault up the western side of Italy was under the command of General Mark Clark’s 5th US Army.

Initial landings took place on 16th September and the Sharpshooters were part of the follow up force, landing on 22nd September.  Under the command of Lt Col Lord Arthur Cranley, the Regiment went into the line on the northern edge of the bridgehead, helping to push over the steep ridgeline of the Sorrento peninsular.
