Both regiments took part in the Normandy landings on D Day +1, where he commanded 4th Armoured Brigade for a short while due to battle casualties. Shortly afterwards, the 3rd and the 4th CLY were amalgamated due to battle casualties.
Sandy, then CO of the 3rd CLY, was not selected to command the amalgamated 3rd/4th CLY and as a result he returned to the UK to command Blackdown pre Officer Cadet Training Unit.
Before the war ended Sandy was a leading light in getting the Regimental Association onto a sound footing and was energetic in helping to run and organise it.
Sandy had a son, Julian, with his first wife who left him during the war. In 1947 he married Agnete, and they had two sons and a daughter (Andrew, Angus and Alexandra).
