The Ironmonger

Pat’s Cromwell tank, where it was when knocked out whilst he was trying to stalk Michael Wittmann in Villers-Bocage.

On return to the UK, Pat became an instructor at RMA Sandhurst and also trained crews in the use of Sherman ‘DD’ swimming tanks. During this time he was best man at the wedding of John and Anne Cloudsley-Thompson.

Pat rejoined 4 CLY just in time to take part in the D-Day Landings in June 1944 and took part in all the unit’s actions in Normandy.

When the regiment was amalgamated with 3 CLY to become 3/4 CLY he remained with the unit, serving to the end of the war in the role of regimental adjutant.
